The Lunar New Year 2023 begins next Sunday, January 22, 2023 and ahead of the celebration of what’s also commonly known as Chinese New Year, we’re checking out what’s in store for us this Year of the Rabbit. The Lunar New year is reportedly one of the most celebrated holidays in different countries in Asia and Asian communities all over the world. The Lunar New Year is based on the lunar calendar, which features 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. These are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig or boar, depending on the region.
Seventeen reported that according to cultural folklore, the legendary Jade Emperor had called upon animals to a race, and whoever finishes first would “determine the passage of time,” the Museum of Chinese in America’s Director of Education Lauren Nechamkin explained. Because the rabbit finished fourth, it became the fourth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac.
Now, every animal in the Chinese zodiac has their own traits and symbols. Rabbits particularly symbolize “longevity, positivity, auspiciousness, wittiness, cautiousness, cleverness, deftness and self-protection.” Aside from those who will be born this year 2023, those who were born in 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, and 1939 are all also born under the same sign.
