May 15 is National Chocolate Chip Day and what better way to celebrate than to have some chocolate chip cookies? The chocolate chip and the chocolate chip cookie was born in the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, where Ruth Wakefield wanted to bake some chocolate cookies for guests. She proceeded to chop up chocolate chunks, tossed it into the cookie dough, and bake it. However, the chocolate chunks did not melt and resulted into a chocolate chip filled cookies. Since then, chocolate cookies became so popular that Nestlé agreed to add Ruth Wakefield’s recipe to the packaging of the brand’s chocolate bars. Nestlé’s Toll House Cookies is named after Toll House Inn, where the first batch of chocolate chip cookies were born, as per Days of the Year.

In celebration of National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, a number of stores are giving away free cookies and other chocolate chip cookie-related treats. According to Thrillist, all 140 locations of Nestlé Toll House Café across the country are offering a free chocolate chip cookie to customers all day today, May 15. Those who drop by Potbelly Sandwich Shop will get a free oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with any purchase. Mexican food chain Uberrito is also offering a free chocolate chip cookie with every purchase of an entree.
